The Polk Bros. Foundation Announces Their Support of UChicago Impact's STEP Learning Recovery Project

This effort will build the capacity of teaching assistants at six elementary schools in the Greater Bronzeville area to provide one-on-one tutoring

Ten efforts receive $2.8 million from Polk Bros. Foundation for Chicago’s equitable recovery

"$146,000 to the Urban Education Institute at the University of Chicago for UChicago Impact to lead the STEP Learning Recovery Project. This effort will build the capacity of teaching assistants at six elementary schools in the Greater Bronzeville area to provide one-on-one tutoring to students who are reading significantly below grade level. Each school will also be given a curated library of student books to use during tutoring that are culturally relevant and appropriately matched to students’ reading levels.

'CPS teaching assistants who already support student learning can increase their effectiveness through training for one-on-one tutoring, which can lead to important academic gains. UChicago Impact’s initiative will position teaching assistants to work directly with students in early grades to ensure they acquire the building blocks they will need to be successful readers as they progress in school.'
